Shadows of the City

Shaodws of the City is one of the most interesting zones in the whole MUD. I don't know if there are any other zones that require you to pay for entrance but this one does! The zone has a number of traps and some high level mobs but, on the whole, is safe for its members.

To enter the zone you must first kill the panhandler in the Dead End (De), he will have a small key to unlock the door to the abandoned shop (Ab). Once in there you must 'lift trapdoor' to open a way down to the Spiral Staircase (Ss) and then 'twist sconce' to open the way south to the Nondescript room. To enter the guild you must become a member by paying the guild's representative.

Once a member the guild's guard will allow you to pass into the guild and it is fully yours to explore. Benjamin the Thief GM is the the Centre of the Cozy Room (Ce) whilst a number of shopkeepers in the Walk of Fences will give you good prices for most of your loot. 'lift seat' in the Bathroom to opens the wasy east to the Dark Passage where you can find a conspirator with a message and a black key. I don't know what the key does yet.

There are plenty of hidden passages, as you'd expect in a Thievies Guild. The Tapestry leading down in eastern Captain's Quarters (Cq) is locked and I'm not sure how you unlock it. Rumours persist that you have to hand a gem to someone. If you find out please let me know. 'lift jaw' will open the tapestry to the south and 'pull fang' opens the a passage to the east. Beyond lies a small maze leading to a fanged dagger. If you kill the dagger (it's a mob) it becomes an item you can pick up. If you drop it it will transport itself back to the Dark Room and become a creature again. The Dark Tunnels to the south of the Quarters lead out of the Guild and down into the depths of the guild. They are designed to confuse. If going south on the map takes you to a single number ('3' for example) you actually move to the numbered room ('D3' in this example). Keep an eye out for the treacherous thief in the Tunnels.

'pull sconce' in the western Captain's Quarters (Cq) opens a passage south and 'push button' opens a way west (look bookshelf, look tome for an explanation). The Dark room (Dr) at the end of the Twisting Passages is trapped. It took about 10 attempts before the trap wears out. All of the Twisting Passages are silence zones so you can't cast spells in them. Use the black key from Cimmerian to open the door to the Dark Room (Dr). The entrance is booby trapped (about five hits) and the Dark Room has a hidden mob: The Shady beast.

To the south of the guild, down the staircase, takes you to the guild's training area, guards sleeping quarters and the Guild's office. The key carried by a resting guildman in Quarters (Qu) unlocks the small, metal lockbox in the Quarters (Qu), the box is trapped so be careful. The Small chest in Lockpicking is locked, and only contains it's own key! Keep an eye out for the high priest of Nightfall in the ALtar (Al). 'pull sconce' in the Guildmaster's Office (Go) to open a way north then 'push button' to open a way east into the Secret Chamber (Se) then, 'turn head' to open a way south into the Luxurious Bedchamber (Lb). Killing Misery in the bedchamber (Lb) will get you kicked out of the Guild and you'll have to pay to become a member if you want to come back!
